How to Practise a Dance from an Instagram Reel

Reels are where the routines are — but the app gives you no loop, no slow-down worth using, and no way to practise one part. Here's how to take a Reel from “saved” to “learnt”, section by section.

Pick the right reference video first

Before any practice tool: vertical Reels often crop the feet, and many routines exist in several versions. Two minutes here saves twenty later.

Full body beats close-up

If you can't see the feet, you're guessing the footwork. Look for a full-body take of the same routine — the choreographer's own page usually has the cleanest version.

Front-facing or mirrored?

If the dancer faces the camera, you'll want to mirror the video so their left is your left. If they face away (like a class follow-along), don't mirror. Decide once, before your first rep.

One routine, one reference

Learning the same dance from three different creators means three slightly different dances. Pick one and commit.

From saved to learnt: the loop

Save the Reel, copy its link, and bring it into a practice setup where you can loop, slow down and mirror. In Mark8, the video arrives already divided into practice sections — tap one and it repeats while you work on it. Then:

Loop one section until 3 clean reps at 0.75×. Move to the next section without re-drilling the first. Join neighbours once both are clean — the transition is where Reels-length routines break. One full run at normal speed ends the session; wherever you blank is tomorrow's first section.

When a Reel won't import

Some links fail — the account may be private, the video region-locked, or the platform may block import. The fallback: download the video where you have permission and upload the file, or find the same routine on YouTube. Practice should never depend on one platform behaving.

FAQ

Can I loop part of an Instagram Reel?

Not inside Instagram. Bring the Reel link into Mark8 — the video is divided into practice sections you can loop, slow down and mirror.

Do I need an account to try this?

No account for the prepared practice example. To import your own Reel you create a free account — Mark8 is in free beta, and videos are processed before practice begins.

The Reel is cropped — how do I learn the footwork?

Find a full-body version of the same routine (often the choreographer's page or YouTube). If none exists, pick a footwork interpretation you can commit to — consistency beats guessing differently every rep.

Should I mirror the Reel?

Mirror it if the dancer faces the camera. If they face away, don't. Mark8 has a mirror toggle so you can flip any time mid-practice.

Can I practise with my own camera beside the video?

Yes — Mark8 has an optional live camera view beside the reference. It's off by default, never records, and doesn't score you.

Turn your saved Reels into practice sessions

Prepared example, no signup. Bring your own Reel link when you're ready.
